Abilities Tennis Day at NC State University
Saturday, February 8th is Abilities Tennis Day at NC State University’s J. W. Isenhour tennis center. Kirstie Marx, Executive Director of Abilities Tennis, asked Hans Olsen, coach of NCSU women’s tennis team, if he could sponsor a day for Abilities Tennis during one of the women’s tennis matches. Coach Hans quickly accepted the invitation and reached out to Coach Mike Baker of Charleston Southern to see if his team would be willing to co-sponsor the day. Coach Mike was excited to co-sponsor the day and his team is looking forward to this event.
Any persons with intellectual disabilities is invited to attend this event which begins at 11 a.m. at the J.W. Isenhour tennis center. NCSU Wolfpack tennis players alongside Charleston Southern Buckaneers will provide drills, games and unified doubles competition. At noon, we’ll stay and watch the fierce competition between the Wolfpacks and the Buckaneers with a presentation between singles and doubles competition. Lunch is being provided by Amedeo’s Italian Restaurant.
This is the first time a NCAA Division 1 team has sponsored an event for persons with intellectual disabilities before one of their matches. This goes along way in improving the well-being and inclusive persons with special needs and shows that college athletics can teach so much more than competitiveness and discipline.
We would like to extend a special thanks and recognition again to Coach Hans Olsen and the NCSU women’s tennis team and to Coach Mike Baker and the Charleston Southern women’s tennis team.
